New Age Literature special for Eid
Short story under word limit. Scroll down to find it ;)
MY LIFE was all ennui. The vineyard business bored me now. The wine had turned sour, the grapes were grey. Moreover, we had marinated and cooked my buyer fat Albert. It was time to move on. We had retired the Garo tribe deep into the Sundarbans, where I had tied them to errant mangrove trees, so I could locate them again whenever I wanted to. Pekinous, my dear manservant, was of course meritorious of better treatment. I salted away in my shoe trunk, pending appropriate punishment.
The bold architecture of Hazrat Shahjallal International Airport welcomed me as I stepped off my Emirates flight. Unfortunately, due to power cuts, the air bridges were unavailable, so we were forced to disembark using bamboo ladders. I barely noticed these indignities, however. My heart was heavy from the demise of my mentor and business partner, the eminent Jabbar Khan, who had sadly expired in Egypt, buried alive in a building collapse. Jabbar Khan, former MP, King of Manpower, had firmly believed in his own immortality, had thus left his affairs in a terrible, convoluted mess.
The Daily Star's Literature page featured a special section titled 'Beginnings'. showcasing flash fiction by members of Writer's Block. Here's my bit
When siblings Zak and Zooey, aged 12 and 10 respectively, stumble upon a haunted house, they are shocked to find it inhabited by a motley crew of monsters, who are on edge after receiving anonymous death threats. Zak dons a detective hat and deduces that a dastardly and devious killer has devised to do away with these denizens of the dark.
Omar has missed the beginning of the new school year because of a case of the chickenpox. He comes back to find that there's something with the new class teacher. She's too nice.
When Captain Zak, aged 12, comes across a trio of mermaids, trapped in a free, floating fishing net, he decides to rescue them. Then he ties them up in order to make them dive to the bottom of the sea and retrieve sunken treasure for him. The mermaids promise to lead him to a spectacular treasure chest, brimming with booty, so he, Genie and two of his ghostly pirates get on a jollyboat and follow their directions. Unfortunately, what they pull out from the depths resembles, not a chest, but a giant bath plug. There is a deafening roar; a seething whirlpool rages around them; and the jollyboat is snapped in two like a matchstick.
